STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.  At St. Luke Academy, we will have daily activities and lessons that introduce students to these subject areas and build their learning through inquiry and critical thinking activities.  Students will engage in hands-on learning activities and be introduced to STEAM based lessons as well as having STEAM integrated throughout the daily curriculum.

Why is STEAM important?

STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS) related careers are showing a rapid growth and are hard to fill because of the amount of positions available.  With growing jobs in the technical fields, STEM related jobs will continuously be in high demand.  With the inclusion of the ARTS in STEAM, it enhances students’ creativity and removes idea inhibition because there is no wrong answer in art.  Art education allows students to use their creativity and allows them to be more engaged in their learning.  STEAM learning is crucial for students and their future.

What does a day of STEAM look like?

During the academic portions of the daily schedule, students will learn about math concepts and phonics.  Along with the math concept that is covered for that day, the teacher can incorporate any of the 5 pillars of STEAM along with the lesson.

For example: If the math concept is shapes, the teacher will do the original lesson and as an addition can have students use shapes to create an art piece. This uses the ART portion of STEAM.  The teacher can also allow the students to build a figure with the shapes.  This uses the ENGINEERING component of STEAM.  Students can use shapes to create addition number sentences and word problems.  This uses the MATHEMATICS component of STEAM.

If the letter that is being covered in phonics is the letter Aa, the teacher can add additional STEAM related activities as well.  Students can cut straws into different lengths and build the letter Aa with the pieces or build words that start with the letter Aa.  This covers the ENGINEERING and TECHNOLOGY components of STEAM.  Students can also count the number of letters used in each child’s name and graph the information.  This uses the MATHEMATICS component in STEAM.

In addition to STEAM integrated into the curriculum, we have a time specifically dedicated for STEAM in our daily schedule.  During this time, teachers and students can engage in hands-on learning activities with the components of STEAM that have not been covered.  Many of these activities can be SCIENCE, ENGINEERING, or TECHNOLOGY related, but it is not limited.  One STEAM activity can cover all 5 pillars of STEAM.

Teachers can use many different, fun, and creative ways to incorporate STEAM into a single lesson and introduce these ideas to students throughout the day.  This will help further the understanding of the concept that is being taught.  Focusing on STEAM activities helps students to be introduced to all different subjects throughout their day of learning.

Abeka is a Christian based curriculum that helps teachers establish all important foundations for students' success. Students will start class off right in learning their numbers, crafts, phonics, and language development. Abeka's philosophy doesn't come from what sounds good or from what other people are doing right now. Instead, it is a teacher-led, character-building philosophy that comes from a biblical foundation -- Proverbs 22:6a, "Train up a child in the way he should go." There's structure and organization because that helps students know what to expect--and what's expected of them--but also because 1 Corinthians 14:40 says, "Let all things be done decently and in order." Every subject is approached from a Christian perspective, and you'll find Scripture and biblical principles used to emphasize or illustrate concepts.
